Oxford LNWR railway station always seemed an odd structure to the citizens, compared to the gothic city and predictable GWR station alongside.
Railway use ended in 1951 and thereafter it descended into commercial shabbyness and criticism in the local press.
Eventually trouble was taken to discover more about its past. This revealed a fascinating connection with the Great Exhibition Building of 1851 the - 'Crystal Palace'. This book details that story including its rescue from possible demolition to splendid restoration at the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre north of Aylesbury.
The building was constructed by Fox & Henderson - the company contracted by Paxton to build the Crystal Palace at Hyde Park and Sydenham. At Oxford they used almost the same sectional design pieces as at the Crystal Palace.
