Crystal Palace Marine Aquarium that appeared in the Illustrated London News.

Opened in 1871 the view is of the main saloon from one of the smaller rooms. There were 60 separate tanks with 303 different species. 36 of the tanks were open to the public. The Aquarium held 120,000 gallons of seawater which was brought by train from Brighton. The building was managed by William Alford Lloyd who was the first professional aquarist and numbered Phillip Gosse and Richard Owen amongst his associates. The enterprise was a technical success but a commercial failure and was declared bankrupt in 1886.
